New Procedure for Release of Your Student’s Directory Information

You will no longer be required to sign a release for your child’s directory information (defined below) to be released. The primary purpose of releasing directory information is to allow the School District of Volusia County to include this type of information in certain school publications. Examples include:

  • A playbill showing your student’s role in a drama production
  • The annual yearbook
  • Honor roll or other recognition lists
  • Graduation programs
  • Sports activity sheets, such as for wrestling, showing weight and height of team members
  • District and school websites and videos

Please note a permission form must still be signed to allow members of the news media to interview, photograph, videotape and/or sound record your student. It is separate from the release of directory information. In addition, lists of students will not be released to any for-profit organization.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law, allows the School District of Volusia County to disclose your child’s directory information without written consent, unless you have advised the district you do not want the information released. If you do not want the School District of Volusia County to disclose directory information from your child’s education records without your prior written consent, please contact your school to obtain and sign an Opt-Out Form.

The following information is designated as directory information by the School District of Volusia
County:

  • Student’s name
  • Parent/Guardian’s name
  • Address
  • Telephone listing
  • Photograph and images
  • Date and place of birth
  • Major field of study
  • Dates of attendance
  • Grade level
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Weight and height of members of athletic teams
  • Degrees, honors and awards received
  • The most recent educational agency or institution attended

CHECKredi Assists District in Collecting Funds

Parents: Your check is welcome at Volusia County Schools. The school district recognizes that occasionally a parent may inadvertently overdraw a checking account and a check may be returned by the bank. In order to recover these funds in a private and professional manner, Volusia County Schools has contracted with CHECKredi, a company specializing in the collection of returned checks.

Each check written to a school or the district must have the maker’s name, address, and one phone number. When a person writes a check to a school or the district, the person writing the check agrees that, if the check is returned, it may be re-presented electronically on the same account for the full face amount and a fee established by Florida law.

CHECKredi will contact you by mail and by telephone in order to make arrangements to pay before attempting to re-present the check electronically. Payments of the check and fee may also be made online at www.checkredi.com using a credit card, debit card or electronic check without any additional fees. For a convenience fee, payments may be made over the telephone at (877) 524-7334 by credit card, debit card or electronic check. Payments cannot be made at a school or the district.
